Chijindu's Hell Begins in the Mind, inspired by Milton's Paradise Lost, features a forlorn figure, trapped in a web of his own nightmarish creation...the origin of Hell.

Artist's Comments:

Milton's Paradise Lost inspired this painting of mine because of its portrayal of Lucifer in an empathetic light. I started off with the idea of this Lucifer and ran with humanizing him, especially in the eyes...I wanted to show a deep sadness in them.

I also used my web of inverted pentagrams (materialism/ego truimphing over the Elements & Spirit) and floating 666s (the "Mark of the Beast") to show him consumed and trapped by his own vainglory, the step to his own self destruction...he is the creator of his own Hell, just as we human beings create our own worlds of Heaven and Hell with our thoughts and emotions.

Hell Begins in the Mind is my pictoral expansion of the "humaness" of Milton's Lucifer because I feel he represents what happens when either side--light or shadow--grows out of control and imbalanced, especially when we refuse to reconcile them within ourselves.

We should recognize the shadow sides of our personalities to balance out our human frailty, not to become consumed or subjugated by them.
